Photos from a safari in Maasai Mara, Kenya

Did you know safari means journey in swahili? Safari is probably something most people plan to do in Kenya. A safari in Kenya and especially a safari in Maasai Mara National Reserve can turn any of us into nature photographers. Below you can see some of my favourite shots from the safari in Maasai Mara.

Maasai Mara 1 32 — In the jungle, the mighty jungle, a lion sleeps tonight. This was no jungle, rather than the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The reserve is known for the amount of lions it has. If you are lucky you will encounter multiple lions during your safari in Maasai Mara.

Maasai Mara 1 30 — We were lucky to get to see lion cubs. This female had brought its cubs to safety to a small cliff. The males begin to hunt the young babies as the babies may one day become challengers. The playful cubs did not seem to be bothered by the looming danger.

Maasai Mara 1 22 — Maasai giraffes are more subtle in their colouring compared to their articulated cousins. Maasai giraffes did not like to be photographed, as the animal is not a huge fan of people anyway, and they gracefully moved away once the cars arrived.

Maasai Mara 1 16 — Vulture observes its surroundings. Maasai Mara National Reserve has a lot of carcasses for them to eat. If you are a sensitive mind you should prepare for the sights of dead animals.

Maasai Mara 2 6 — Ostrich sitting on her eggs. A male impregnates three females at a time but only one female stays to take care of the eggs whilst the other two are kicked out.

Maasai Mara 2 8 — Kingfisher is a colourful and beautiful bird. This one was basking in the sun. Remember to take a tan lotion to your safari in Kenya as even if you are sat inside a vehicle you will catch the burning rays of sunlight.

Maasai Mara 2 26 — Elephants roam around Maasai Mara in female herds. The herds are led by matriarch who protects and leads the goup. In the photo a younger female was caring for a baby.

Maasai Mara 2 32 — Lion brothers napping in the shade. The young males get kicked out of their prides when they grow older. After this they create their own groups until they become leaders of their own prides.

Maasai Mara 2 34 — The running bud of Usain Bolt. The fastest mammal, cheetah, hiding from the sun in the bushes.

Maasai Mara 2 35 — If you hit your timing right you might be able to see the Great Migration of the Wildebeest during your safari in Kenya. Wildebeest come from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Maasai Mara. This is a small portion of the million animals that herd in Maasai Mara during autumn months.

Maasai Mara 2 39 — We were lucky to see a leopard. Leopards live in trees so people rarely see them. This one young one came down to observe the people around it.

Maasai Mara 2 42 — Warthog babies were an adorable surprise of the trip.

Maasai Mara 2 44 — Warthogs bring happiness with just their existence. .

Maasai Mara 2 58 — There were a million zebras in Maasai Mara which is why there are so few photos of them as they almost become a commodity during the safari.

Maasai Mara 2 9 — Sun rise over a tree in Maasai Mara is almost a screensaver worthy photo.
